2-4 hours in a tumble dryer on low heat. 3-4 tennis balls break up down clumps with every rotation. Every 30 minutes we manually check and break apart any remaining lumps. The down must be 100% dry – not a percent less.

How do I wash a down vest at home?
Honestly? It's one of the hardest things to wash at home. Wet down clumps inside the baffles, and without a tumble dryer and tennis balls there's no breaking it apart. If you try: use a down-specific detergent, wash at 30°C, minimal spin, then tumble-dry for hours with tennis balls. Skip that and the vest comes back flat and stops keeping you warm.
Does washing ruin the down?
Not the washing itself - bad drying. Down survives a wash in the right detergent, but if it dries clumped it loses up to 90% of its insulation. We tumble-dry for 2-4 hours with tennis balls that break the clumps apart on every rotation, checking by hand every 30 minutes. The down comes back fluffy and warm like new.

How do I get the wet-dog smell out of down?
That smell is down that never fully dried - bacteria break down the keratin in the feathers. Home drying on a rack rarely reaches 100% dryness deep inside the baffles, so the odour keeps coming back. We tumble-dry the down completely and check every baffle. One proper dry and the mustiness is gone.
