Professional sweater washing

Your sweater doesn't belong in a washing machine

Cashmere, merino, alpaca – every fibre needs different treatment. Bad washing turns your favourite sweater into a felted rag. Good washing means you wear it for years.

How it works

You bought a 500 PLN cashmere sweater. Now you're afraid to wash it.

It's been sitting in the closet for three weeks because a coworker told you how his merino shrank two sizes after one wash in a home machine. At 40 degrees. With regular detergent. Sound familiar? Anyone with at least one decent sweater in the closet knows that fear.

Your home washer can't tell cashmere from cotton. It spins with the same force, heats with a tolerance of a few degrees too high, and regular detergent has a pH of 9-11 – perfect for bedsheets, catastrophic for wool. The scales on the fibres open up, interlock, and your size M suddenly becomes a children's S. Irreversibly.

What a home washing machine does to your sweater

Felting – your sweater shrinks by 2 sizes

Temperature above 30°C + alkaline detergent = the scales on wool fibres open and permanently interlock. The sweater becomes stiff as felt and 20-40% smaller. This is irreversible. No hair conditioner trick will fully undo it.

Stretching – the neckline droops, cuffs lose their shape

Wet wool loses half its strength. Just hang a wet sweater on a drying rack – water acts as a weight, and gravity does the rest. The neckline stretches, shoulders sag, the hem bunches up. Permanently.

Colour loss – navy fades to dingy blue

Alkaline detergents and too-high temperatures release dyes from the fibres. Dark and intense colours – red, navy, black – lose their depth. Wool dyes need a slightly acidic environment (pH 4-6). Your detergent has a pH of 10.

A professional laundry eliminates every one of these risks. Different detergents, different temperature, different mechanics, different drying. You drop off your sweater, pick it up like new. No stress, no surprises.

How we wash your sweater

7 steps that protect every fibre

Step 1

Inspection and material identification

Inspection and material identification

We check the label, but also verify by touch – customers often bring sweaters with incorrect labels. We tell cashmere from merino by sheen and elasticity. We document stains, wear spots, and measure dimensions – width, length, sleeves. After washing, we go back to those numbers.

Step 2

Sorting and preparation

Sorting and preparation

We divide by material, colour, and method. Zippers get fastened, sweaters turned inside out. Every sweater goes into a fine-mesh laundry bag – zero friction against the drum. We test dye fastness in a hidden spot.

Step 3

Pre-wash stain removal

Pre-wash stain removal

Coffee on cashmere? Greasy sauce on merino? Every stain needs a different approach. On wool, never proteolytic enzymes – they literally digest the fibre. We use lipase for grease, glycerin for tannins, citric acid for deodorant marks. We always test first.

Step 4

Washing under controlled conditions

Washing under controlled conditions

Professional wet cleaning machine – not a regular washer. The drum rotates slowly, with long pauses. Cashmere: 20-25°C, pH 5-6.5. Merino: 25-30°C. Alpaca: 20-25°C. Detergents with lanolin nourish fibres instead of destroying them. Precision to 1°C.

Step 5

Flat drying with reshaping

Flat drying with reshaping

No hanging. We lay the sweater on a mesh drying rack with airflow from below and above. We hand-shape it to the recorded dimensions – shoulders, neckline, cuffs. Temperature max 35°C. Time: 4-12 hours, no rushing.

Step 6

Steaming and depilling

Steaming and depilling

Steam at 100-110°C from a distance – relaxes fibres, removes odours, restores fluffiness. Mechanical depilling removes bobbles without damaging the surface. For cashmere: hand-combing with a cashmere comb. Your sweater looks store-fresh.

Step 7

Quality check and packaging

Quality check and packaging

We inspect visually, by touch, and by scent. Are the stains gone? Does the shape match? Is the softness up to standard? Cashmere gets packed with tissue paper in a breathable non-woven bag – never in plastic. Ready for pickup.

Reviews from Google (4.9/5)

"A cashmere sweater from my husband for our anniversary. 600 PLN. For half a year I was afraid to wash it and wore it less and less. I brought it to Gorące Żelazko – it came back soft as the day I bought it, perfect shape, same colour. Now I wear it twice a week. from 40 PLN for peace of mind."

"I have five merino sweaters I wear to the office instead of shirts. I washed one myself – it shrank and felted after a single wash. A 350 PLN lesson. Now they all go to Wrońska. They come back pill-free, soft, perfect size. I'm not risking it anymore."

Frequently asked questions about sweater washing

The questions we hear most often - about wool, cashmere, felting, price and turnaround.

How do I wash a wool sweater without shrinking it?

Wool felts from three things at once: temperature above 30°C, alkaline detergent, and friction. The scales on the fibres open and lock together permanently - the sweater shrinks by 20-40%. At home: cold water, wool detergent, no spinning or rubbing, dry flat. We wash at a controlled temperature and reshape the sweater back to its recorded measurements.

Can you machine-wash cashmere?

You can, but you're risking a lot on one wash. Cashmere is more delicate than regular wool - it felts easily and stretches under the weight of water. A home machine won't hold a steady low temperature or gentle mechanics. If you must, use a wool programme, a mesh bag, and dry flat. It's safer to bring it to us - we wash cashmere with lanolin that nourishes the fibres.

How do I get the bobbles off a sweater?

Bobbles (pilling) come from friction - under the arms, on the sides, at the cuffs. At home a fabric shaver or a special comb helps, but it's easy to nick the surface of the sweater in the process. We do mechanical depilling without harming the fibre, and hand-comb cashmere with a cashmere comb. The sweater comes back smooth, no bobbles and no holes.

How much does sweater washing cost in Lublin?

Washing a wool or cotton sweater starts from 40 PLN. Cashmere, alpaca and mohair are priced individually, since they need gentler products and more work at the drying stage. We quote after we see it, before we start - no surprises at pickup. The full price list is on our site.

How long does sweater washing take?

A sweater is normally ready in 48 hours - flat-drying with reshaping alone takes several hours, so it can't be done well in a rush. If you're in a hurry, we have a 24h express option. We also offer pickup and delivery across Lublin, and we're used to English-speaking customers. We tell you the deadline at drop-off and we stick to it.

Can a shrunken sweater be saved?

Honestly: felting is mostly irreversible. Once the wool scales have interlocked, no hair-conditioner trick brings the full size back - sometimes you can recover a few percent through soaking and gentle stretching. Bring the sweater to us, we'll assess it and tell you honestly what can realistically be done. No promises of miracles.
